The reason is simple it will help you to choose the right wine for you. Here is how it works.

Acidity is one of 4 main factors how people describe the wine. These factors are Acidity, Tannins, Body and Sweetness.

If you know what one of each these factors means and more importantly if you know what level of these factors you like in your wine, you have a better chance to buy the right wine for you.

When you think of acidity, you might think of a lemon, which would be correct. But you might also think about apple, pear or pineapple. All these fruits have a different level of acidity.

Lemon is at the top of the scale, with the highest acidity. If you bite into an it the acidity will cause your mouth to water, and you will feel the freshness.

Same apply to wine. White wine has generally higher acidity than reds.
Here is an example of wines with different acidity levels ordered from high to low:

  • Sauvignon blanc
  • Chablis
  • Gewürztraminer

Example of red wines ordered from high to low:

  • Barolo (Nebbiolo)
  • Beaujolais (Gamay)
  • Pinot Noir
  • Zinfandel
  • Merlot

Remember the acidity is just one of the main factors on how to decide which one you might like.
